The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is a wondrous carnivorous plant life form that can currently be found only within a 14,000-acre preserve in North Carolina. These lab-grown Venus flytraps are available for your personal collection. Enjoy the Mars Venus Flytraps for your pleasure. To ensure optimal growth, keep the pots within a tray of water 24/7, similar to a hydroponic setup, for maximum results in size.
The Venus flytrap is a predatory plant that feeds on small creatures, such as creepy crawlies. These flesh-eating plants thrive in soil that lacks nitrogen, obtaining this essential nutrient from the creatures they trap. The captured prey provides the plant with the necessary nitrogen to produce intricate food compounds, like proteins and fats.
The Venus flytrap is one of a small group of plants that can rapidly snap shut. When a bug or insect crawls along the leaves and touches a hair, the trap will only close if a second hair is touched within twenty seconds of the initial contact. This two-touch trigger mechanism ensures that the plant does not waste energy on non-food items.
The Venus flytrap is a small plant with delicate, mollusk-shaped leaves that resemble flowers, attracting various creepy crawlies. When open, the leaves are red and emit a sweet fragrance. They are equipped with hardened hairs along their edges, and within the leaves are extremely sensitive, tiny hairs that cause the leaves to snap shut when touched. It takes the activation of two hairs to trigger the closing of the leaves, making it more likely that the object that touched the hairs is a living creature.
Once the trap is closed, the Venus flytrap secretes digestive juices to process the captured bug. The plant benefits from a variety of creepy crawlies, such as ants, beetles, woodlice, worms, flies, grasshoppers, and moths. After trapping the insect within its leaves, the plant releases fluids that help digest the caught creature, allowing the Venus flytrap to absorb the nitrogen from the bug's body.
Interestingly, the Venus flytrap is named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus. This carnivorous plant is available as a long-tooth variety, accompanied by a sundew plant, and comes potted in a 2-3 inch plastic container. For optimal growth, it is essential to only feed the plant with rain or distilled water.
